The Best of Hybrid Cars (December 2010)

Toyota Prius, the benchmark
As its name indicates, it is a forerunner (Prius means ‘pioneer’ in Latin), and consequently it is a step ahead of the rest. Its innovative design has even served as an icon for the hybrid concept. Nearly 3 million cars have been sold across the world since they first appeared in Japan in 1997. Their average consumption is 3.9 litres per 100 km, equivalent to CO2 emissions of 89 g/km. From €24,000.

Honda Insight, the strongest competitor
It reached Europe in 2009, but has been sold in the US since 1999. With a similar appearance and performance to the Prius, its lower price makes it the leader’s great rival. It has emissions of 101 g/km and consumption of 4.4 l/100 km. From €19,900.

Ford Fusion Hybrid / Mercury Milan Hybrid, the American version
With elegant design, both cars – which have the same chassis and technology – are sold only in the US, with the sole difference that the Mercury is a bit more expensive. The Ford model was voted Car of the Year 2010. They offer performance like that of conventional cars. From €20,800.
