Founded in 1866, there aren’t many other music schools that have produced as many winners in the most prestigious international contests, especially pianists, violinists and cellists. It currently has in the region of 1,000 students and approximately 160 postgraduates doing research into musicology. It also has a music school (secondary-education level) that offers 11 grades to hundreds of talented children.
It is one of the higher education institutions in the United States with the lowest admission rate (7%). It instructs students at various levels, ending their time there with a perfect command of their instrument, voice and composition.
Specialised in classical music and jazz, it offers university, postgraduate, professional and doctorate courses. It has a 'pre-university' division for students between 5 and 18 years old. 40% of the alumni come from outside the US.
