Private security: top training with the leaders in intelligence.

Courses for private bodyguards, seminars for security executives and training for combating the new pirates of the sea: in the International Security Academy in Israel, Mossad experts guarantee excellence.

"The Academy’s latest initiative is tailored to one of the most frequent threats of our time: a course in combating sea piracy, the nightmare of Spanish fishermen –particularly in waters of the Indian Ocean– and cruise ships from across the world.

But the range of courses offered by Israel’s International Security Academy (ISA) is much broader, covering all methods of combating terrorism and other kinds of violent crime. ""If you want to be considered the Best, you should train with the Best"", is the Academy’s motto.

It is not hard to see that these words are the plain truth. The reason is found in the origins of the ISA, founded in 1992 by Doron Madmony, member of Yamam, Israel’s counter-terrorism unit, and General David Mirza, with close links to the Mossad, Israel’s intelligence service.

Own techniques

In the area of security, it is a well-known fact that, for historical reasons, the Israelis are a role model. That explains the enormous success of its courses for bodyguards and private-security guards, seminars for executives and special courses conceived for high-risk areas and piracy –most imparted by Mossad experts– whose prices range from 6,000 Euros (4 weeks) to 20,000 Euros (11 weeks).

The training includes hand-to-hand combat techniques based on krav maga, a form of contact fighting of Israeli origin, and the use of highly-efficient arms. But the ISA emphasises that its aim is not to provide “Rambo” style training. The objective is to ""improve emotional and physical preparation under situations of stress"".

How? By working to increase ""the self-confidence of students"", through combined practical training, simulations and guided exercises ""in a disciplined atmosphere which differs from the strictly military"". By gaining professional know-how and experience, this method enables participants to gradually improve their skills and eventually become what the organisers describe with certain pride as ""modern warriors"".

Threats at sea

The maritime protection course was held last summer in Haifa, for the first time. Students participating in this course are required to familiarise themselves with the special operation conditions on-board passenger ships and freighters, study the possible attack strategies employed by pirates and specifically train to respond to possible threats to ships and their crews.

""Modern-day pirates are no watch thieves or common criminals. They are terrorists"", affirmed David Mirza when he presented this new initiative of the ISA. ""We need to support the security agents of ships in order to safeguard the lives of the people and the cargo that they carry"".

This presentation was soon followed by a stream of applications. The participants in the first course included the chief of the bodyguards of the Prime Minister of Kenya, a country threatened by the troubling situation in neighbouring Somalia. Another sign of ISA’s enormous international prestige is the news that the new President of Honduras, Porfirio Lobo, has hired one of the Academy’s instructors as chief of his bodyguards."
