Consumer electronics comes back to life

The industry has been hard hit by the financial crisis, but world sales began to pick up in late 2009. In 2010 consumer electronics will turn over some 230 billion euros.

"The consumer electronics industry is one of the most dynamic and go-ahead sectors worldwide, though it has also been one of the chief victims of the financial crisis. Consumer spending fell by 6.7% in 2009, in what was the first fall in global sales since 2001.

The American consultants iSuppli say, however, that growth will return over 2010, largely thanks to the good progress in sales of LCD TVs (with liquid crystal displays), digital TV receivers and home appliances. The industry’s turnover came back to life in the second half of 2009 in a trend that will continue in the coming months. iSuppli analysts foresee that the consumer electronics sector will have revenues of some 312.3 billion dollars (some 230 billion euros) in 2010, a figure that would represent 1.6% growth over the previous year.

But structural changes are taking place which will transform the way the industry works, the experts say. The West and Japan are losing ground to the emerging economies, which will see the highest growth rates in the coming years.

The Chinese giant again

For example, according to Business Monitor International (BMI), consumer electronics sales in China will rise at an average rate of 8.5% up to 2014, well above the big American and European markets. Chinese purchasing power is growing at a frenetic pace and in the last few months demand has shot up for flat-screen TVs, digital cameras and 3G mobiles.

The mobile telephony segment is also recovering. The Worldwide Mobile Phone Tracker quarterly report by consultants IDC says that world sales of mobiles are set to rise by 11.3% in the last quarter of 2009, up to 325.3 million units, reversing the downward trend of previous quarters. Despite this good figure, sales fell by 5.2% over the year as a whole, to 1,130 million units. In 2010 it is expected that the good results of late 2009 will be consolidated."
