Electronic ink dominates the e-Book market

The electronic ink screen has allowed eReaders (reading devices for electronic eBooks) to curb the advance of the tablet, maintain market growth around 70% and ensure its future.

Young people do what little reading they do on tables or mobiles, but inveterate fifty-something readers want a terminal that does not tire the eyes, and this can only be achieved with an electronic ink screen and with paper. In order to choose the reading format, screen size and connectivity, and to know if it is better to buy an unrestricted terminal or one tied to a bookshop, we should know a few things about eReaders. We tell you about them.

  • The reading format. Not all eBooks can be read on all eReaders. Amazon has created a padlocked universe for its Kindle reader and for its electronic book readers, and when purchasing this excellent terminal we should know that we will always be tied to the literary electronic offering of this internet sales giant. Choosing eReaders with ePub and PDF reading formats ensures access to a larger universe of books as well as bestsellers.

  • Connectivity. Readers who can connect to 3G mobile networks and to wireless Wi-Fi networks are the most expensive ones but offer the most convenience. Are they worth paying for? It depends on the degree of independence you want to have. To download books to an eReader without network connectivity you have to connect it to a computer via a cable. A bit inconvenient when travelling, particularly if you want to read the press. Find out whether connectable eReaders come with a browser so you can search for any book in any bookshop on the internet. Otherwise you will be tied to the electronic bookshop that has sold you the terminal.

  • Library-compatible terminal. Allows all books in the reading formats it incorporates and sold without digital rights management (DRM). The eBooks of many bookshops come with DRM suitable only for the readers they sell, but in most cases such readers allow books without DRM.

  • Screen size. The larger the size the greater the weight. Terminals with larger screens are advisable for newspapers. It depends on your habits.

  • MP3 and multimedia. They allow you to listen to music while reading. Indispensable for books enriched with music and moving images. In the future they will all be like this.

  • Colour. Indispensable for reading magazines and for schoolchildren.

  • The eReader universe is gradually expanding and enriching. Double-screen terminals have appeared: one is in electronic ink and the other is a computer screen. Plastic Logic has investigated eReaders that can fold up like a newspaper.
