Tell me what TV you have and I’ll tell you who you are

The TVs available on the market offer many different possibilities and features. Getting to know them and their differences can help you find the best TV for your tastes and needs.

If what you want is to be up to date, many brands such as Sony, Samsung, Toshiba, Panasonic and Sharp have already brought TVs onto the market that allow you to see the image in three dimensions. The system chosen by the brands to offer 3D technology consists of alternately transmitting images for the left and right eye, while special glasses open and close a shutter synchronized with the TV image to give an impression of depth. The price is around 2,000 euros and at the moment the main contents offered are sports and films, as well as some videogames. The future may lie in achieving 3D technology for the home without the need for glasses.

Plasma or LCD?

Apart from the great innovation represented by the arrival of 3D in the home, the major question when it comes to making a decision is nearly always focused on the choice between plasma and LCD. When the market in both technologies began there were many differences, above all in terms of size and price; but today it is difficult to say which of the two offers better quality.

LCDs can now be as big as plasma TVs and offer similar features. Initially, LCD distorted the image when it moved quickly, but today these problems have already been resolved with fast refresh panels and image processors. Meanwhile plasma, which initially was much more expensive than LCD, has reduced its price significantly.

High definition and connection to the future

But we also have to choose between two high-definition formats: HD Ready and Full HD. The difference between these two formats is the resolution. While Full HD has 1080 lines (1920 x 1080 points), HD Ready has 720 lines (1280 x 720). So a Full HD TV shows images more clearly and in more detail.

Other features to take into account are the connections. Today it is essential that a TV has HDMI inputs, as these allow the entry high-definition digital audio and video: the television of the future. These connections can be used with a DVD player, video camera, multimedia hard disc, Blu-Ray reader or the latest generation of videogame consoles such as X-Box or PS3.

Given all these considerations, possibly the best TV in the world is the one that manages to satisfy the needs of each consumer. The following list includes some that are most popular, innovative or have won most prizes. It provides a small sample of the TVs that are most highly regarded for their quality and features.
