Acknowledged and recognisable worldwide, it has carved a legend: unique items conceived for kings and maharajas, famous designs – such as the panther brooch of Wallis Simpson- and popular lines such as the ‘Trinity’ wedding ring or the ‘Love’ line with screws. Founded in Paris in 1847, it was passed from parents to children until it was sold in 1964 to a Swiss financial company that has multiplied its business. Nowadays, Cartier sells its classics to the large audience and it creates custom-made jewels for select customers.
With a good nose for marketing, Greek Sotirio Bulgari gave his surname an Italian touch in order to get established in Rome in 1879, he applied to jewellery the principles of fashion and he earned an international clientele addicted to his colourful designs.
A US citizen of Ukrainian origin and a highly-gifted boy for jewels (at the age of 12 he bought for 2 cents an emerald he sold for 800 dollars a few days later), he was the first to “dress” with his jewels the Oscar nominees, in 1943.
