The building of the New York Metropolitan has the honour of being the most popular of its kind, and, catering for an audience of 4,000, it is also the biggest. Though it is currently located in the Lincoln Center, when the company was set up back in 1883 it was on 39th Street. The old building burned down, and despite being remodelled, it was demolished in 1967. A year earlier the company had already moved to its current site, which heads this ranking drawn up by Worldguide.
This huge building was inaugurated in 1869 with Mozart’s Don Giovanni, but it was half-destroyed by bombs in the Second World War. A centre of Viennese culture, it can house up to 2,200 people.
Following two fires, the current building located in London’s West End was built in 1856. It is the chief opera house in the United Kingdom and is fully accessible.
