The Best of Collecting

Damien Hirst (UK), millions in provocation
The enfant terrible of British art – he is reckoned to have a fortune of more than 200 million euros – has been able to dispense with galleries and place his works directly by auction. After selling his famous shark in formaldehyde for more than 12 million dollars and his diamond-encrusted skull for 50 million pounds, he has just launched an exhibition with four canvases painted by himself – which he hadn’t done for three decades – hung alongside paintings by Rembrandt.

Gerhard Richter (Germany), the “orthodox priest” of painting
If Damien Hirst is the art market, Richter is art, though he too has a market. For half a century his paintings have ranged from realism to abstraction. He works with oil photographs.

Louise Bourgeois (France), a living legend
“Maman” Bourgeois is the matriarch of contemporary world art. Aged 98, she is a living legend. Her huge bronze spiders, her fabric figures, her suffering images – all are world icons.
