Top options in Spain for golf fans
The convenience of a club in the middle of Madrid or Barcelona or the quality of some of the best golf courses in Europe, in the regions of Andalusia, Valencia and Murcia. Spain is an ideal place to learn and practise golf.
When choosing the best place to learn to play golf in Spain, there are several factors to take into account: from the convenience of having a course nearby, to its quality, to its maintenance, the facilities and, why not? the design. In most large Spanish cities, training courses are organised within the city centres for all levels.
Out of the over 350 courses in Spain, many of them were designed by international renown designers. Just to mention some, the Club Puerta de Hierro in Madrid and the Club de Golf Sant Cugat in Barcelona were designed by Harry Colt, and the ones of Valderrama and Sotogrande, in Cadiz, by Robert Trent Jones.
Madrid: more demand than supply
Playing in Madrid is not easy: the number of courses is still insufficient compared to the constant increase of enthusiasts. One of the new courses is that of the Spanish Royal Equestrian Association Club de Campo, in San Sebastian de los Reyes: 36 holes and designed by American Robert Von Hagge.
One of the most demanded schools is Palacio de Negralejo, in Rivas Vaciamadrid, considered to be one of the best in Spain: as well as being able to train any kind of strokes, the facilities include 2 putting green and 2 approach areas, which give support to students, about 500 per quarter.
At the Centro Nacional de Golf, of the Spanish Royal Golf Federation, in Mirasierra, you can also enjoy a large offer, although you must be affiliated in order to attend lessons.
Those looking for the convenience of a course-school in the centre have the Green Canal, at Avenida Islas Filipinas, with a practice court with 100 positions and a 9-hole pitch and butt. tudents can count on top-level professionals: players of the European circuit and members of the national golf team, some of them currently competing. It is the first course in Spain with automatic ball dispensers.
Golf in Catalan
The Prat is considered to be Catalonia’s most exclusive club: designed by Greg Norman in a wonderful villa in Terrassa, it is a 45-hole course, for all levels, that allows you to combine 5 routes. Individual and group lessons are given.
Another top-level school is the PGA Golf de Catalunya, in Caldes de Malavella (Girona), which offers private lessons, both for players wishing to improve their technique and swing and for those wanting to start from zero.
You can also practice golf at the centre of Barcelona, in the Confort Golf, managed by the school Moon Masters of the prestigious Salva, Santi and Kilo Luna brothers.
A bonus in the Mediterranean
El Saler, in Valencia, is one of the most demanded clubs in Spain. Opened in 1968, it was listed among the 6 best in Europe in the World Golf magazine. It organises courses for small groups, of 3 or 4 people. In Murcia, we must mention the La Manga academy, recognised as golf instruction leaders.
The kingdom of golfers is Andalusia, with over 90 clubs. Two of them, in Cadiz, are among the best in Europe. The Valderrama, hosts every year the Volvo Masters, and the Real Club de Sotogrande, although does not enjoy the same glamour, is considered by some as the best in Spain.
