Space adventures: the sky's your destination

Being in space, feeling your body float, seeing the Earth from outside, being an astronaut for a moment and forming part of history are all possible thanks to space tourism. It’s the most exclusive trip in the world.

Since in 2001 the multi-millionaire Dennis Tito bought the first holiday package in space with the company Space Adventures in collaboration with the Russian Space Agency, the industry of exclusive tourism has turned to promoting trips into space.

The company Destinia, associated with the company Space Adventures, was the first to offer space trips in Spain. Starting only a few months ago, the agency offers its customers a number of programmes that range form a week aboard the Space Station that rotates around the Earth, at a price of €16 million, to a DSE-Alfa mission around the moon for €80 million. The price includes accommodation and an intensive training package lasting 6 months.

In 2007 Richard Branson's company Virgin Galactic launched space trips at a much more accessible price. Since 2009, starting at €140,000, anyone who once dreamed of being an astronaut can fly on board the SpaceShip 2 at an altitude of more than 100 kilometres an enjoy a spectacular view of the planet Earth. They can also experience the feeling of zero gravity for 5 minutes.

The agency Bru & Bru Travel Designer, run by the Catalan businesswoman Ana Bru, is responsible for selling sub-orbital trips in Spain and Andorra. They include a luxury stay and training at the Spaceport America facilities in New Mexico. A unique experience for lovers of space.

A front-row seat at celestial spectacles

You don’t have to leave the Earth's crust to experience the fascinations of the firmament. Some travellers are prepared to go thousands of kilometres to see celestial spectacles from the best observation points.

Bru & Bru is the Spanish representative of Eclipse-City, the world leader in trips to view solar eclipses. From Patagonia to Tatakoto Island in Oceania, and including Pacific cruises. For 11 July they have planned a trip to the island paradise in the French Polynesia to see a total eclipse of the sun lasting 4 minutes and 36 seconds.

In Luosto, in the heart of Finnish Lapland, the hotel Aurora Chalet provides its customers with 28 rooms with views to the north to observe another of the most beautiful sights in the sky: the spectacular magic of the aurora borealis. Because its appearance is unpredictable, each room has an alarm to warn guests when one is forming on the horizon.
